In 2024, a young boy named Ethan Dallas took his own life after an encounter on the famous gaming platform, Roblox. Ethan, who had autism, was fifteen years old at the time of his death. He had been playing Roblox since he was nine. Bullied by the kids in his neighborhood, Ethan found the game as a way to escape. At the age of 12, Ethan met a kid his age on Roblox named Nate, and they soon became good friends. Nate even taught Ethan how to turn off some parental controls on the game. They later began communicating on Discord, where the conversations soon turned sexual between the two “friends.”
Not after long, Nate began forcing Ethan to send him explicit photos of himself, threatening to tell Ethan’s mother and make their conversations public if he didn’t. In 2022, a year after he met Nate, Ethan began having serious anger fits, and had to be sent to a residential treatment center for a year. Later, it was found out that “Nate” was actually Timothy O’Connor, a thirty-seven year old man that had been arrested on separate charges of having inappropriate content of children and transmitting harmful materials to minors.
Becca Dallas, Ethan’s mother, recites a day when she heard a knock on her bedroom door and Ethan entered. ”He just came and laid his head on my lap, and kept saying, ‘I love you,’ “And I said, ‘I love you, too,’” she says. The next day, Ethan was found dead on his bedroom floor. “I couldn’t believe it. I thought Roblox was a children’s game,” says Ms. Dallas, who later sued Roblox for wrongful death.
At the time of his death, Ethan had four older siblings and was best friends with his two young nieces. He was the star pitcher on his baseball team for youth with disabilities, and was the class clown at his school. One of his teachers says that he often came into class with an apron on to make snacks for his classmates. Ethan dreamed of being a Disney imagineer when he grew up, and was learning how to drive. He was planning on buying his father’s car and painting it purple.
There have been multiple high-profile news stories about online grooming and its disastrous results. Human traffickers are able to gain information about and access to victims online due to their lack of knowledge about internet safety. Staying safe online is crucial, and it is something that everyone should know how to do. Here are a few tips for staying safe online and keeping your identity safe:
- Never share pictures of yourself, especially if you wouldn’t want them to be seen by a friend or parent.
- Know who you’re communicating with. A “friend” isn’t always a friend. Encounters like Ethan’s could be extremely dangerous, maybe even life threatening.
- Never share personal information such as your full name, address, phone number, passwords, school, etc.
- If you feel like you are in danger, contact a trusted adult immediately.
- Report it if you see it. If you witness someone being harassed online, make sure to report it immediately. You could be saving a life.
Whether you are personally experiencing a potentially dangerous encounter online or are a bystander of one, it is crucial that you report it immediately. Always proceed with caution when being on the internet; you never know who someone might actually be in reality. Even if you think a game is safe, it is still important to be careful. For example, after her son died, Becca Dallas said, “I couldn’t believe it. [I] thought Roblox was a children’s game.”
