The Ballot
As the Republican primaries approach, there is lots of discussion revolving around the eligibility of Trump as a presidential candidate. As discussed in past articles, Colorado, along with a few other states have moved forward in possibly removing Trump from the voting ballot altogether. This has been argued based on the 14th amendment in the constitution, which states that no officer may remain in office following any involvement in a political insurrection.
In this case, the prosecution has argued that the events of January 6th have deemed Trump ineligible for office. On the other hand, the defense argues that the title of “officer”, as it is called in the amendment, is not applicable to the status of President. After extensive discussion, it seems that the judges are favoring the defense. Due to the more vague claims made based on the amendment.
Despite the huge legal issue, it is believed that this will not set back the former president’s candidacy this year, as the primary is too soon for any changes to take place properly.
Business & Branding
Otherwise, Trump has faced even more harrowing legal issues. This week in court, he avoided what some call the “business death sentence”, as he was set to have been banned from conducting business from his companies all together based on fraud and misrepresentation charges. While he did avoid this charge, he was hit with major fines of $355, along with a few other cash penalties, restrictions, and ongoing supervisions.
The Sneakers
Soon after his court ruling, Trump made a surprising announcement with the release of his $399 golden sneakers. It is believed by many that his intention was in fact to assist with paying off his fines with the expected revenue from sneaker sales. Many are unsure of how the sneaker business will play out and if any success will truly come of it.
