The awards took place on Sunday, August 30th. This year’s host was Keke Palmer. Many of the performances were pre taped in front of green screens due to the inability to have live audiences. Some of the performers included Ariana Grande, BTS, Tate McRae, Black Eyed Peas, DaBaby, Doja Cat, Lady Gaga. Some of the winners included The Weekend with his Blinding Lights video for Video of the Year, Lady Gaga as Artist of the year, Doja Cat as the Push Best New Artist, Song of the year and best collaboration went to Rain on Me by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande.  The full list of winners can be found on the MTV website.

Some of the highlights from the evening were Lady Gaga’s performance of “911”, “Stupid Love”, and “Rain on Me”. During her entire performance she was rocking a face mask! The Weekend also kicked off the show with an incredible performance of his song “Blinding Lights”. During his acceptance speech for best R&B music video he brought to light social issues going on right now. He said “It’s really hard for me to celebrate right now and enjoy this moment, So I’m just gonna say, ‘Justice for Jacob Blake’ and ‘Justice for Breonna Taylor.’ ”

Although there were many great performances and speeches throughout the night Lady Gaga really stole the show. She won best cinematography, best collaboration, song of the year, artist of the year, and tricon. Winning the Tricon award is the equivalent of being inducted into the VMA’s Hall of Fame!
