When running from the Evil Queen Snow White meets a group of dwarfs. When the palace guards embark on a mission to bring her back, a commoner and his group of woodland bandits band together to protect her.
The live action remake of the 1937 Snow White was released on March 21, 2025. Starring Rachel Zegler as Snow White, Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, and Andrew Burnap as Jonathan. With a running time of 1 hour and 49 minutes, the budget for this remake was 209 million dollars USD. But has only made 87.3 million dollars world wide (so far), well under Disney’s expectations.
There have been many mixed reviews on the new movie. Katie W. on Rotten Tomatoes said “The jumble of tones and styles laid atop this basic narrative feels like it’s trying to please everyone and ends up pleasing no one.” While Tim C. states “In terms of just a movie — that I saw with a bunch of children — the kids love the movie, and the adults might want to step back.” Another review from Linda C. claimed “It might not be the fairest of them all, but it does have its moments.”
A lot of controversy has followed the new movie. Starting with the casting, Rachel Zegler, an actress of Colombian descent, playing a Disney princess prompted racist backlash. “‘The name of the movie is Snow White, okay?!’conservative pundit Ben Shapiro said in a YouTube video published six months ago that boasts 700,000 views” (Time.com)
Even the idea of a Snow White movie in 2025 had some people taken back. Some people think that a fairy tale that features seven dwarfs is politically incorrect. In the film, Snow White is flanked by seven computer-generated little people, a blow to little people who hoped for the roles, according to Dylan Postl, an actor who is a little person. “As he told the broadcaster Piers Morgan in 2023, ‘I can’t go for the Harrison Morgan or George Clooney roles because that’s not for me.These dwarf roles are for people who are like people of my stature…now think about the additional stunt actors or body doubles, now you’re talking about multiple actors of my stature that don’t get these major roles.” (Time.com)
One thing that I was confused by when reading about this movie, is that they changed the plot. In the original Snow White prince Florian saves Snow White with a true love’s kiss. But because this is the 21st century we changed it from a prince to a commoner. The narrative focuses on Snow White’s ambition to become a leader rather than waiting for a prince to rescue her.
Many people believe this movie was a flop, while some give a little light to the movie. What do you think of this new addition to Disney?
