Some of Flagstaff’s students have made it to States in the Science Fair! These students include Diya M., Charlie D. Maya R., and Olive S. States happened this past weekend, and went so well for our Dragons.

Diya and Charlie both placed within the top three of the Junior Division and received first in their respective categories. Olive and Maya worked together on a partner project and received the “Honorable Mention” in the Chemistry category and a special award for Chemistry.

Questions –

What was your project?

What does your project fix/do?

How can you take your project farther?

What was your project?

Diya M. – “The Environmental Effects on the Embryonic Development of Sea Urchins.”

Maya R. and Olive S. – “Water = Bad Your Solution to Not Seeing in Rain!”

What does your project fix/do?

Diya M. – “It sees how different sound, temperature, and light conditions affect how sea urchin embryos develop. It sees how light pollution, sound pollution, and global warming affect the embryonic development of marine life. It can show that us humans are affecting animals even before they finish developing, possibly killing off species. If an animal has a defect when the egg is fertilized it will ruin its whole life.”

Maya R. and Olive S. – “We worked to find an affordable and effective solution to waterproofing glasses, as well as a chemical analysis of rubbing alcohol and isopropyl alcohol. We conducted a variety of tests to find which chemical would work most effectively in waterproofing glasses. We found that the RMR solution and Rubbing Alcohol were the best.”

How can you take your project farther?

Diya M. – “Test different conditions such as PH or look at other things on how it affects other parts of sea urchins.”

Maya R. and Olive S. – “Well, we are planning on participating in the Thermo-Fisher Junior Innovators Challenge online, which is an online, national competition for STEM. Also, we could expand on it by studying Rubbing Alcohol and its properties more in-depth.”
