Twelve year old Maia is staying with her grandparents for the summer while her sister is recovering from burns she got in a house fire. This has left Maia feeling alone, scared, and anxious. She doesn’t know her grandparents well and there seems to be nothing to do in the mountains of Minnesota. As Maia gets to know her Grandpa Howard, she learns that he is a volunteer fire-watcher. He spends hours in a tower above the forest watching for smoke or fire. With Grandpa Howard and a stray pup at her side, Maia learns that with patience and a little bravery, all your fears can be conquered.
