Honoring Navajo Code Talkers

Honoring Navajo Code Talkers

Elizabeth Robbins, Reporter

During World War 2 the US Marine Corps recruited around 400 Navajo Code Talkers. Navajo Code Talkers are Navajos who created a secret code using the Navajo language! Their goal was to make the code so that enemies of the US couldn’t understand what the US was saying. At the time, the US was trying to prevent Japan from decoding their messages. At the end of WW2 Japan and the US were in an intense battle. Both countries were trying to win the war and wanted to have the advantage. The US ended up winning with the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Code Talkers played a huge part in this and because of them it was possible to win the war! In 1982 Ronald Regan named and established August 14th to be Navajo Code Talkers day to celebrate them! Currently there are 3 code talkers still alive out of the over 400 that were recruited about 80 years ago.
