April Science Project - Lava Lamp

WARNING: Make sure to do the following project with a parent for extra precaution.

To Make a Lava Lamp You Will Need:

  • A clean plastic bottle, try using one with smooth edges
  • Water
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Fizzing Tablets (e.x. Alka-Seltzer)
  • Food Coloring
  • Flashlight

Instructions:

  1. Fill the bottle up with about ¼ with water.
  2. Pour some vegetable oil into the bottle until it’s almost full. You might want to use a funnel. You might have to wait a few minutes for the water and oil to separate.
  3. And a few drops of your food coloring. Watch as the color sinks through the oil.
  4. Break your fizzy tablet in half and drop part of it into the tablet.
  5. Grab a flashlight, turn off the lights, and drop the other half in! This time shine the flashlight through the lava lamp as the blobs float around!
