The Biggest Bubbles – Science Project

The Biggest Bubbles - Science Project

WARNING: Make sure to do the following project with an adult for extra precaution.

To Make Giant Bubbles, you will need:

  • 6 cups of purified water
  • ½ cup cornstarch
  • 1 Tbs. baking powder
  • 1 Tbs. glycerine (Corn syrup can be substituted for glycerine)
  • ½ blue dawn dish soap (‘d prefer not to specify a brand, but the type of detergent can literally make or break your giant bubbles). You could also use Dawn Ultra-not concentrated, Joy Detergent, or Dawn Pro.
  • A bowl

To Make a Bubble Wand, you will need:

  • About 54 inches of cotton string
  • Two sticks each 1-3 ft long (the same length for each stick though)
  • A metal washer

Instructions Bubble Mix:

  1. Mix the water and cornstarch together in the bowl.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients and stir well without whipping any tiny bubbles. This is the mixture, you can either use it immediately or stir again and use after an hour or so.

Instructions for Wand:

  1. Tie the string to one end of the stick.
  2. Put a washer on the string and then tie the end of the string to the other stick so that the washer is hanging in between, on around 36 inches. Tie the remaining 18 inches of string to the end of the first stick, this way you will create a triangle.
  3. With the two sticks parallel, and together, dip the bubble wand into your mixture, immersing the string completely.
  4. Pull the string out of the bubble mix and then pull the sticks slowly apart so that you form a string triangle with a bubble in the middle.
  5. Then step backwards or move the wands to create the giant bubbles. You can “close” the bubbles by moving the sticks together.
