The End of the War in Afghanistan

The End of the War in Afghanistan

Dylan Blackwell, Copy Editor

The longest war the US has ever fought has finally ended. The war lasted from October 7, 2001 to August 30, 2021. The war began after the September 11 attacks, when the US entered Afghanistan to topple the Taliban’s rule there. This was to make sure that terrorist group Al-Qaeda could not create a base of operations there.

The Taliban was overthrown for the first time on December 9, 2001. Afterwards, the US government created a democracy in the country to prevent any other terrorist groups from taking over again.

April 14th, 2021, the US announced a full troop withdrawal from Afghanistan by September 11th, 2021. On August 15, 2021, the Taliban reached Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, and took over the presidential palace. The U.S. and other countries are trying to keep the peace as Afghanistan transitions into the Taliban’s rule – again.
