Science Project – Blizzard in a Bottle

Elyse Prestopnik, Reporter

WARNING: Make sure to do the following project with a parent for extra precaution.

To make a Blizzard in a Bottle, you will need:

  • Clear plastic bottle with straight sides
  • White washable paint
  • Water
  • Popsicle stick
  • Disposable cup
  • Baby Oil
  • Alka-Seltzer tablet

Instructions:

  1. Pour some of the white washable paint into the disposable cup.
  2. And some water to the cup. Not too much, just enough to thin the paint a little bit.
  3. Use the popsicle stick to mix the paint and water.
  4. Pour the paint and water mixture into the bottle, until the bottle is around ¼ of the way full.
  5. Tilt the bottle and add baby oil until the bottle is about 90% full. Try not to mix the baby oil with the paint mixture.
  6. Drop ½ of an Alka-Seltzer tablet into the bottle.
  7. Have fun!

How does it work?

The oil is less dense than the paint and water mixture, which means that it floats on top. When the Alka-Seltzer tablet starts to dissolve, it releases carbon dioxide, which rises to the top, taking clumps of paint with it. Once the carbon dioxide escapes the bottle, the paint sinks back down to the bottom of the bottle.
