As many people have heard, deportation has been a huge part of the Trump administration’s agenda, but what is really happening?
Recently, thousands of immigrants have been deported for small or non-existent crimes. In fact, according to the Marshall Project, only about 12% of deportees were convicted of violent or potentially violent crimes. A lot of people find this contradictory considering that president Trump claimed he would only be deporting dangerous criminals who pose a threat to the safety of the public. While the face of the operation supports this claim by only showing felons with serious convictions, the public isn’t seeing the majority of the individuals actually being deported.
These deportations also aren’t always private. US Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) has held public raids where they have been arresting illegal immigrants at large gatherings. In fact quite recently—August 12th – August 15th—ICE staged a raid in Connecticut where they arrested 65 illegal immigrants. 29 of whom were identified to be convicted of serious crimes, including, but not limited to, kidnapping, drug offenses, and weapons violations. Others allegedly had connections to transnational gangs or had previous criminal history in their home countries. One Los Angeles raid even took place outside of a Home Depot, targeting day laborers and food sellers gathering outside of the store.
These raids and deportations have sparked protests. Even some of the president’s supporters are starting to question the deportation crackdown he has been imposing on our country. There is also concern about employment and job losses. California, Florida, New York, and Texas will likely have the highest number of job losses due to the large immigrant populations in these states. Not only that, but the increasing amount of deportation will cost the US half a million child care jobs.
All of this being said, the Trump administration’s actions have had and will continue to have a huge impact on our country.
