This year, there have been four major plane crashes, unfortunately causing lots of death and injuries:
Delta Air Lines Crash:
On February 17 in Toronto, Canada, a Delta plane managed to roll completely upside down upon landing. There has not been an identified cause for this accident, but an investigation is underway. Luckily nobody died, however there were 18 people taken to the hospital, three of which suffered from critical injuries: a child, a man in his 60s, and a woman in her 40s.
American Airlines plane crashes into Army helicopter:
During the night of January 29, a plane for American Airlines was going to Reagan National Airport in Washington. It unfortunately collided with an Army helicopter that was on a training mission. They both exploded into flames, and everyone on the plane and helicopter died, which was a total of 67 people: 64 on the plane and 3 on the helicopter. The airplane crashed into the Potomac River, and search teams attempted to find any survivors, but after tireless work, the Fire Chief said “Despite all those efforts, we are now at a point where we are switching from a rescue operation to a recovery operation. At this point, we don’t believe there are any survivors from this accident.” This means that instead of looking for survivors, they are now shifting their attention to finding the deceased. This incident was the most deadly plane crash in the U.S. in over 20 years, and an investigation is ongoing as to why the two aircraft collided. Unfortunately among the victims were figure skaters from the U.S. and Russia who had just gone to the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas. As of that Sunday afternoon, 55 of those killed had been identified, and parts of the plane – which had broken into approximately 3 pieces – were found in about a one mile range.
Medical jet slams into the ground in Philadelphia:
In northeast Philadelphia on January 31, a medical plane slammed into the ground after only one minute of being in the air. The aircraft went up in flames, along with surrounding cars and houses. All six people on board and one person on the ground unfortunately died. This airplane was transporting a child back to her home in Mexico after getting treatment in Philadelphia. Her mother, two pilots, a doctor, and a paramedic were all on board.
Regional plane crashes in remote Alaska:
On February 6th, a small passenger plane carrying 10 people vanished. It was flying to Nome, Alaska, and a huge search operation was set off to find it. A day later, the plane was found, along with the bodies of nine passengers and the pilot.
