Recently, the prime minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, has made the decision to ban social media for all kids under the age of 16 across the continent. Albanese says that the ban was put into place to hopefully reduce amounts of cyberbullying and mental health issues caused by social media, and improve well being. While a decision on what platforms will be banned has not been decided yet, it is believed that apps like Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, and X will be banned, but messaging apps like Youtube and WhatsApp might still be allowed. One of the ways they plan to restrict social media is by having apps that can not be accessed by children under the age of 16, and while they know that kids will eventually find a way around these restrictions, they are hoping that everything will be relatively easy and the ban will work out well. While many people in Australia are unhappy with this new rule, many feel like it is an important step towards protecting children from the dangers that may come from social media apps.
