On September 6, 2024 the Flagstaff Academy Board of Directors voted on some changes in the school dress code.
“The dress code is an integral part of the official charter for Flagstaff Academy, and its purpose is to help create a positive environment conducive to learning. Students are expected to be well-groomed, dressed in a manner reflecting respect for themselves, the school, and those around them. As future leaders, students are trusted to use good judgment in the choices they make.” (Flagstaff Academy Parent Handbook) In the updated dress code you can wear text, graphics, and images on your shirts. As Long as the images, ect. Do not include prohibited items. (For the full list look in the Parent Handbook) “Distressed jeans, frayed edges and ripped jeans/pants are acceptable (provided that the rip is not larger than the front of the student’s closed fist).” (Flagstaff Academy) You can now dye your hair unnatural colors and wear camouflage. In the original dress code your shorts/skirts must be longer than your fingertips when standing arms straight at the sides or mid-thigh (whichever one is longer). But now that policy has been removed. The rest of the dress code remains the same for the time being.
To learn the process I communicated with Mandy Davies, the president on the board of directors. The Board of Directors does review the dress code annually, but tends to not make changes. The process of reviewing the dress code began from a suggestion from one of the principals. The original dress code has been in place for over 10 years so it was time for some changes. Once word reached parents, students, and staff that the dress code would be reviewed the board of directors received dozens of emails which were read out loud at the monthly meeting. There were also parents, staff, and even some students who came and shared comments during the Public Comments time on the agenda. The policy committee had several meetings to look over the suggestions, comments, and emails. They wrote up a draft which was reviewed by the rest of the board and by Principal Gustafson. The teachers and staff had a chance to look over the draft before it went into final vote. The dress code was voted and approved on September 6th. Teachers, staff, and families were notified of the new dress code. The effective date is October 1st so that teachers and staff have time to update and figure out enforcement.
