Sleepmaxxing: The New Tiktok Trend
BY NHI VUONG
In the past, we viewed sleep as a waste of time. It was considered lazy, and hard workers slept much less. But times have changed; nowadays, getting in bed early is cool. Especially for the younger generations, who better understand the benefits of a goodnight’s rest and prioritize sleep. Sleep experts say this is a beneficial thing. Consistently sleeping well can benefit your heart, brain, immune system, and mental health. A fascinating new story in “The Times” explores this new growing fixation, specifically the large number of people who think perfect sleep is not enjoyable enough. These people are sometimes called “sleepmaxxers.” After so many years of worrying too little about sleep, is it possible some of us have started worrying too much? There are best-selling guidebooks, smartwatches, smart rings, temperature-changing mattresses, straps, plugs, masks, glasses, and even mists. People regularly get millions of views on TikTok and Instagram testing out sleep hacks and accessories and filming themselves taking off their sleeping gadgets, a trend known as “morning shed.”
However, sleep experts say the most reliable hacks are the cheapest and most simple.
- Get in and out of bed at the same time every day, no matter how well you sleep.
- Lower the temperature in your room to between 65 and 68 degrees.
- Limit alcohol and caffeine in the hours before bed.
- Exercise!
In 2017, researchers came up with the word “orthosomnia” to describe the phenomenon of people who are on the perfectionistic quest for ideal sleep. If that sounds a bit like you, it might be time to slow down. In short, sleep is a passive process. We should protect sleep, not maximize it.
