On August 5, 2024, district judge Amit Mehta ruled Google responsible for monopoly over the widely used search engine. Competition against Google, such as DuckDuckGo and Bing, is no match for it. This started an antitrust case, or a case regarding an illegal monopoly, against Google.
Having existed for 25 years, Google has acquired over the years a massive amount of data that broadens its search engine, making each search more accurate. It makes deals with other businesses, such as Apple, to get more users on its search engine. Its countless advantages have held it in control of the search engine for a long time. How is Google, the 2 trillion dollar company that has dominated 90 percent of search engines around the world, to be restricted to balance itself with other tech companies?
On September 9, 2024, in Alexandria, Virginia, a hearing was held to decide what should be done to reestablish Google’s opponents and end its illegal monopoly. Google Ads is a significant app made by Google that enables users to advertise their businesses, products, and services to the public. In 2020, this feature accounted for about 4 percent of Google’s income. Making Google sell its advertisement app is being considered, it there could be enough restrictions on Google to manage its monopoly.
