Recently, many schools across the country have started banning cell phones. They were banned statewide in Florida last year, and a ban in Indiana and Los Angeles came into effect this year. While students and parents have mixed feelings about this new policy, many teachers believe that phones are too distracting and this new policy makes sense. However, many students disagree. A student at one school said: “ I hate this new phone system a lot. I was like, dude, what if there’s someone in here and I can’t- my mom and dad- I can’t talk to them.”
This year, at least 8 states have made rules to ban phones in school and while many parents like the banning of cell phones, more than half of the parents believe that students should be allowed to use their phones sometimes, such as at lunch and recess. However, what some people don’t understand is that one of the problems with students and their phones isn’t just the constant use of apps such as Snapchat and TikTok. Some students also use their phones for bullying and other uses to harm other students. And with the new ban, some teachers have noticed improvement in this issue.
Teachers have also noticed that banning cell phones has helped improve students’ ability to concentrate on lessons and work in groups. In general, schools hope that banning cell phones will reduce distractions and tech misuse by students.
So whether students like it or not, many schools across the country believe that banning the use of cell phones is the right thing to do in order to improve students’ learning abilities.
