The United States Women’s National Team took home the gold in the Olympics! It was an exhilarating match with unmatched competitiveness. Lots of emotions were flowing through on different teams, emotions of sadness, joy and completeness. This is the U.S. 5th gold medal, (1996, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2024) 1 silver (2000) and 1 bronze. (2020) It was a 12 year gap since they won gold.
The U.S.W.N finished top of the group above Germany, their main competitor. Then they moved forward to the Round of 8. U.S.A beat Japan 1 to 0 with a goal by Trinity Rodman in extra time. It was such a tough and challenging match for the team. Also Alyssa Naeher with an outstanding performance keeping the team in the game.
In the semi-finals it was a match against a very good squad. It was quite the tense match heading into overtime. Until Sophia Smith, their main star player broke the deadlock in the 5th minute of extra time. Naeher once again made a spectacular save to win the game.
In the finals they now face Brazil. In the first half there were many chances for both teams. Brazil played a more possessive tactic of soccer where they waited for the other team to make a mistake and break through. While the US played a counter attack style where they get the ball and immediately get it up the field to catch them off guard to score. In the second half Mallory Swanson was assisted by Korbin Albert to make the game 1 – 0. In stoppage time Naher once again made an amazing save for them to win the gold medal.
In conclusion I personally think that Alyssa Naeher, the goalkeeper, deserves player of the tournament. All of the saves she made to keep the team in the tournament were unreal. She had a spectacular performance.
