The growth of artificial intelligence and its capabilities has spurred a need for all countries to begin putting efforts into their AI companies. The reason for this is that if they don’t, they will rely on another nation for this powerful technology, which is set on a course to reshape industries, drastically change employment opportunities, and become an integral part of our everyday lives. Countries want to have power over AI to set themselves up for profit in the future.
America’s possession of some of the most advanced tech companies has proved advantageous to its position in the global AI race. As AI advances, the US has been making moves to ensure its success in the field. For example, in 2022, America discontinued the shipment of powerful AI chips made by a Californian company to China because they could help Chinese progress in artificial intelligence.
China invested billions into advancing its AI technology, and it added it to its national surveillance system to move itself up in the AI race. When OpenAI launched the widely known and used ChatGPT, which was a significant AI achievement for the US, China scrambled to make up for it. Moonshot AI’s Kimi Chatbot was created in March 2023. This online feature is similar to ChatGPT, and can process two million Chinese characters in one input.
Mohammed bin Salman, the prime minister of Saudi Arabia, has invested several billions into AI technology and, with the help of several large companies, is promoting progress in the field.
Though AI is a revolutionary field, concerns about security issues and inaccurate online content associated with AI make many reluctant about progress in the area. The European Union, or EU, have created regulations on AI usage in the form of an act. The act came into effect on August 1, 2024. Subsections of the act will ease into effect over a series of dates. The EU plans for its AI Act to protect security and online safety of citizens by banning forms of artificial intelligence that invade privacy.
