Kiva Meridan is only 17 years old, but 10 years of her life have been spent in the death prison: Zalindov. Kiva is a survivor, she works as the prison healer, always doing whatever it takes to stay alive. Many people would have lost hope, but Kiva knows her family is out there, and they’re coming for her, or at least they say they are. The Rebel Queen is captured and brought to Zalindov, but she is extremely ill and Kiva can’t figure out what’s wrong. At the same time Kiva receives a note from her family saying “Don’t let her die. We are coming.” This would be easy enough except that The Rebel Queen is sentenced to the Trial by Ordeal. Four elemental challenges, air, fire, earth, and water. A death sentence. Kiva volunteers to take the Rebel Queen’s sentence risking her own life. If she triumphs they will both be free, but if she fails both of them will die.
