Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history . Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history. The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, half a century after the Thirteenth Amendment got rid of slavery in the United States.
That September, the Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by Black Americans and other people of African descent.
Black History Month is so important because history helps us make sense of the present. When we discuss social issues, race relations, and structural inequality, black history provides essential context. It informs conversations about progress, challenges, and the ongoing fight for justice. While Black History Month is a wonderful time for realizing what happened in the past, it’s essential to recognize that Black history isn’t confined to a single month. It’s a continuous subject that unfolds every day. Museums, education programs, and exhibitions work very hard to tell important Black and African American stories throughout the year.
More than 50 years after his assassination in 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered as an activist, a prominent leader in the civil rights movement, and a pioneering historical Black figure.
Rosa Parks was a civil rights activist whose refusal to give up her seat to a white passenger on a segregated bus in 1955 led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
Maya Angelou never failed to use the power of her skilled words to candidly reflect on the sorrows and celebrations of the human experiences.
As a gay Black man in America, from the 1950s to early 80s, James Baldwin’s works reflecting on race, homosexuality, social justice, and religion gave way to countless classic novels, essays, poems, and short stories. (Go Tell Them On The Mountain)
Black History Month is a very important time during the year! It showcases all the good and experiences of Black and African American people which has helped shape our nation. Black History should be recognized all throughout the year
