Halftime Show
At the Super Bowl halftime show, Usher was joined by Alicia Keys , H.E.R., will.iam., Lil Jon, and Ludacris. Usher’s halftime show sent the message that after 30 years in the business, the singer is still the King of R&B. The 45-year-old artist, who released his ninth studio album, Coming Home, just days before the performance, drew on his three-decade career to deliver a show that reaffirmed that Usher is truly an unparalleled performer.
Ahead of the performance, Usher acknowledged that his sizable body of work and many years in the music industry made it tough to come up with a set list that could encapsulate his career in just 13 minutes on the Super Bowl halftime show stage.
“I was very mindful of my past, celebrating my present, which is here in Las Vegas, and thinking about where we are headed in the future,” he said in an Apple Music press conference leading up to the performance. “What songs do people know me for? What songs have been a celebration of my career? That was the idea.”
Commercials
There were lots of amazing Super Bowl commercials and lots of not so great ones. Here are the top three and bottom three.
- Google’s place for its Google Pixel camera showed a man with a visual impairment as he used the technology to take photos of himself and his family. The ad was “powerful” because it “linked tech with emotion,” someone from the ad panel said.
- The Google Pixel ad was given an A rating by the Kellogg panel.
- This ad for CeraVe skincare products showed actor Michael Cera claiming that he developed its moisturizing cream – after all, the product includes his last name. The humorous spot underscores that dermatologists, not Cera, actually developed the moisturizer. CeraVe received an A from the ad panel.
- This humorous spot played on last year’s ad from Dunkin’, when Jennifer Lopez tracks down Ben Affleck at his place of work – a Dunkin’ drive-through. In this spot, Affleck ropes in his friends (Damon and Brady) to wow Lopez with his boy band, the DunKings. This ad was the No. 2 ranked spot in USA Today’s Ad Meter, which is based on viewer votes.
- Temu ran the same spot several times during the Super Bowl, an animated commercial that showed people receiving low-priced items from the Chinese shopping app, which befuddled some viewers and prompted the Washington Post to complain, “Just the same lame ad, over and over.”
- Homes.com featured three spots, starring actor Dan Levy from “Schitt’s Creek,” during the Super Bowl, but failed to convey to viewers what its benefit was, the Kellogg panel said. Homes.com was one of 11 brands to receive a D grade from the panel, its lowest score this year.”The ads just seemed a little all over the place,” Rucker said.
- This ad looked flashy and had a cameo from Martin Scorsese, but it failed to connect the dots between the company’s services and the commercial. The commercial depicted an alien invasion of Earth, but humans are too wrapped up in their phones to notice.
