The United Nations hosted yet another annual climate summit, known as the COP28 this year- lasting from November 30th to December 12th. The United Nations climate summit is hosted each year in order for countries to make pledges, aim for changes, and work together for climate progress.
Some exciting news was that this summit actually made notable progress. This year, over 200 nations have agreed to transition out of using harmful fuels such as coal, oil, and gas. This is a very important step towards staying under the climate goal, and ensuring a better future for the world.
This summit has brought immeasurable change, as despite many past meetings, every meeting prior to this one has failed to mention or address the usage of fossil fuels. Many times this meeting has avoided the topic, as numerous countries’ trade and economy heavily relies on the trade and system around these fuels. Because of this, even a mention of change around the topic is great progress.
Despite the wonderful change being brought about from this summit, there are still a few issues. This year is still the hottest on record- especially for Antarctica. Temperatures in Antarctica are rising up to four times as fast as around the rest of the world, and not much change is thought to come for the area. Antarctica was not addressed at the summit, despite the dire need of attention.
