Even though climate change is a grim topic, and often brings more sadness than optimism, climate activist Ayana Johnson says that joy is the key to successful climate progress.
“What people perceive as hope or optimism is actually just joy.”
There are many positives and negatives amidst climate change as of now. It is believed that China’s emissions (being the largest contributor to climate change), are set to peak in the next few years. This, along with many other grim statistics regarding emissions and climate change have been circulating, and don’t plan to stop. Although on the other hand, a lot of countries are making huge decisions that are bound to make a real difference. The recent climate change summit brought forward monumental changes regarding cutbacks on greenhouse gasses and other harmful emissions, while shifting towards more healthy energy options for the future.
Another huge development in climate action is the involvement of youth. Younger generations hold a huge sway in public opinion, and Gen Z has brought huge help to the fight. Many protests, lawsuits, and petitions have been brought about by the younger generation.
Of course, it is very important to acknowledge the hard truths of climate change. News of sprouting flowers in Antarctica, and island nations slowly losing their land must be heard for change to be made. Although this, and joy for change can be held at the same time – bringing both passion and motive to the fight.
