Barbie was a long expected movie that defied everyone’s expectations. Advertised as “If you like Barbie, this movie’s for you. If you hate Barbie, this movie’s for you,” this movie attracted lots of different viewers, all of which were very happy with their experience. The movie followed “Stereotypical Barbie” as she battled an existential crisis. The Barbie movie was not only drop-dead hilarious, but also a movie that truly makes you think about how you are living.
Oppenheimer, one of the newest movies in theaters, was released in the United States on July 21, which happened to be the same release date as the Barbie Movie. The movie follows Robert Oppenheimer, American physicist, in leading the Manhattan Project to the creation of the atomic bomb, which would be used against Japan in the last days of World War II.
The two highly anticipated movies came out the same weekend, leading to a battle. Both had deep messages, but each had their own feel throughout the movie. Ultimately, Barbie ended up on top with more than $155 million generated within the opening weekend. On the other hand, Oppenheimer earned slightly less than $85 million. Barbie’s huge success in its opening weekend gave Greta Gerwig, the director of Barbie the place as the highest earning film by a female director.
To add, many people had a lot of fun coming to the Barbie and Oppenheimer movies. Many people dressed up to watch the movies. For Barbie, many dressed up in either pink or outfits inspired by the very extravagant yet timeless outfits featured in the film. For Oppenheimer people went the opposite direction going for very classic “dark academia” outfits. Some people who attended both movies on the same day even got extra creative and created “Barbenhiemer” outfits that morphed from one aesthetic to the other.
