Monthly Debate: Do Fish Perceive Water Like We Do Air?

Mandy Roth and Olive Spohn

Olive: I believe that fish do NOT perceive water like we do air, for two main reasons. The first being that they breathe air out of water, not the water itself. This also means that air bubbles rise from the water, and we don’t have water bubbles in our air. Another reason that I believe this is because water often has tints, whereas air does not, and we aren’t able to properly see any color of the air.

Mandy: I think fish perceive water like we perceive air because for them living in water is similar to us living in air. While humans can only survive underwater for so long fish can also only survive in air for long. This would lead me to believe that fish see water like we see air.
