The Next Great Read: They Called Us Enemy

Juliet Slater and Katelin VonFeldt

This empowering and devastating book about Japanese internment camps during World War 1 and the effect of them on lives. This book is from the perspective of a young Japanese boy during World War 1 in 1914. The Takei family was first taken from their home to a detainment facility at Santa Anita racetrack, where they were forced to sleep in horse stables, then on to Camp Rohwer, an internment camp in Arkansas. The family’s cabin was hot and small, but they did their best to make it a home. This book shows the struggles of this time for people and the harshness of the U.S. government. This book is for all ages, including parents. It is very important to spread awareness about these unfair circumstances.
